Controlling Asthma
After careful consideration of the frequency and severity of your symptoms, your doctor will determine the type of medications that are needed to help control your asthma.
Your medications are likely to change as your symptoms get better or worse.
Rescue Inhalers
Rescue inhalers work immediately to relieve asthma symptoms. They are also referred to as fast-acting or quick-relief inhalers.
Although rescue inhalers are effective at providing immediate relief, they are not intended to have long-term effects on asthma symptoms.
Because rescue inhalers can be overused, speak with your doctor of you feel your medication is being used too often.
Controller inhalers
Controller inhalers work over a period of time to reduce airway inflammation. They are also referred to as preventative or maintenance inhalers.
It’s important to use your controller inhaler, even if you feel “good”. Because your controller inhaler is slow-acting, you will still need a rescue inhaler nearby to handle potential attacks.
Pills and liquid controller medications are also available.
Using Your Inhaler
Proper Technique (without a spacer)
§ Remove the cap; shake well.
§ Hold the inhaler firmly, and sit up straight or stand up.
§ Place your lips around the mouthpiece. It should be resting between your teeth with your tongue flat underneath.
§ Breath in and out once.
§ On your next inhale, press down on the canister to release the medicine. You should inhale slowly for three to five seconds.
§ Hold your breath for ten seconds. This allows the medication to deposit in your lungs.
§ Repeat the above steps for each puff of medication ordered.
§ Replace the cap.
What is a Spacer?
Spacers are holding chambers that turn inhaled medicines into a mist that can be more effectively inhaled.
When you put an inhaler directly in your mouth, most of the puff lands in the back of your throat and can be ineffective.
When you use a spacer, you’re able to breath mist from the chamber directly into your lungs. The medication is not wasted in the back of your throat.
Using Your Inhaler
Proper Technique (with a spacer)
§ Remove the caps from the inhaler and spacer; shake well.
§ Insert the inhaler into the open end of the spacer.
§ Breath out.
§ Place the mouthpiece between your teeth with a firm lip seal.
§ Spray one puff of medication.
§ Breath in slowly and completely. If your spacer is whistling or making a horn-like noise, you are breathing in too quickly.
§ Hold your breath for at least 10 seconds.
§ Remove the spacer and breath out. Wait one minute.
§ Repeat the above for each puff of medication ordered.
§ Replace caps on your inhaler and spacer.
Asthma Action Plan
An asthma action plan tells you what to do when a breathing attack occurs.
Asthma action plan should include instructions for preventing breathing attacks as well as recognizing and handling worsening asthma.
Asthma action plans are commonly divided into three zones: green, yellow, and red.
Exercising with Asthma
Kids want to have fun! Unfortunately, some children experience asthma symptoms when they are playing and exercising.
Tips for exercising with asthma:
§ Take it easy, and start slow.
§ Stick with a buddy.
§ Know your triggers.
§ Take frequent breaks.
§ You may need to use your medicine before you exercise.

4. Stop and take a break when playing.
