U.S-IRAN NUCEAR DEAL: CHALLENGES and UNCERTAINTY

BY Professor Bob Rabboh

This examines among others, the Iranian nuclear deal, former president Trump withdrew from the pact in May 2018, efforts to revive the original agreement known as JCPAO, and the obstacles associated with indirect negotiations between the U.S and Iran.

First, what is the original nuclear agreement? Here, former President Obama has called newly elected Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in September 2013 to discuss Iran's nuclear program. It was the first contact between the U.S and Iran since 1979. More importantly, the P5plus 1 (permanent of the UN Security Council plus Germany. They signed the 2015 nuclear Pact, providing Iran with some sanctions relief. Whereas Obama praised the deal for cutting off Iran most likely path to bomb. Meanwhile President Rouhani hails it as a political victory to Iran. Further, Obama was eager to conclude what he considered his legacy achievement of negotiations of the deal. In this light, Iran agreed not to produce either highly enriched uranium or plutonium that could be used in nuclear weapon. Also, agreed to eventually implement protocol that would allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, unfettered access to nuclear facilities.

Significantly, on January 16, 2016, IAEA verified that Iran has completed the necessary steps that will ensure Iran's nuclear program is exclusively peaceful. As a result, the U.S, European Union, and the United Nations suspended their sanctions.

SECOND, former President Donald Trump withdrew from 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018 and imposed more sanctions. That is, imposition of maximum pressure policy, presented a turning point in the vision of the region cast the shadow of Cold War over the Persian Gulf,

Further, Iran's economy suffered years of recessions, currency depreciation, inflation, largely because of sanctions on its energy sector. Yet, deadly attacks on prominent Iranian in 2020. Notably, Iran has been resuming nuclear activities since the U.S pull out of the nuclear deal.

THIRD. Diplomacy and Biden Administration, from April 21, 2021, to June 2021, Iran and the Six world powers have been in talks to restore full compliance with 2015 pact, Thus, Vienna indirect talks for six rounds between the U.S. and Iran failed. Hence, Qatar, U. S strong ally and partner hosting indirect talks between the U.S and Iran in Doha under the auspices of the European coordinator

FOURTH, Obstacles to revive 2015 nuclear pact. Saudi Arabia and Israel regime both are against the 2015 Pact. Iranians and diplomats have stated that providing assurance that Washington will not quit the pact again and the IAEA drops its claims against Tehran's nuclear work. Additionally, the U.S and Iran would return to the original deal, but they disagree on the steps to get there.
