Alhawadeth – Paterson: By Adnan Khalil:

In Paterson, New Jersey, at 9 a.m. on June 20th, hundreds of Patersonians marched to Islamic Center of Passaic County, The Broadway Mosque,

where group prayers were held in the courtyard of the mosque, and then they headed to the park east of Paterson, where the main ceremony attended by Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, and the ceremony was attended by a number of Arab community members.

Speaking to Alhawadeth, Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said: "This Day is a celebration of Freedom which ended Slavery. I am proud to participate in a peace march on Broadway. In honor of the movement we painted the street Red, Black, and Green to reflect and respect the Pan-African flag. Yesterday, I issued proclamation to consider #JunTeenth an official holiday in Paterson. We raise 3 slogans of solidarity, peace and freedom”.

Alhawadeth interviewed Rima, an Arab American, to discuss her community’s solidarity with Black Lives Matter. She said "America is going through an American “Intifada” to end racism, this movement equates the Palestinian struggle for justice and freedom.

A number of activists also expressed their gratitude for the fact that Alhawadeth Newspaper covered the celebration and solidarity with the black movement, which they say it is not a moment, it's a movement. This year's Juneteenth celebration comes to us in the wake of mounting protests in the United after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota last month.

Another Ceremony held, a group of Patersonian and officials gathered at the Underground Railroad site to lay a wreath in honor of Juneteenth, including Congressman Bill Pascrell and Andrea Sayegh. What is

*What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth (a portmanteau of June and nineteenth),  (also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day, is an unofficial American holiday celebrated annually on the 19th of June in the United States to commemorate Union army general Gordon Granger's reading of federal orders in the city of Galveston, Texas, on 19 June 1865, proclaiming that all enslaved persons in the U.S. state of Texas were now free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them almost two and a half years earlier, and the American Civil War had largely ended with the defeat of the Confederate States in April, Texas was the most remote of the slave states, with a low presence of Union troops, so enforcement of the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent.

Celebrations date to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. It spread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering on a food festival. During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, it was eclipsed by the struggle for postwar civil rights, but grew in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African American freedom and arts. By the 21st century, Juneteenth was celebrated in most major cities across the United States. Activists are campaigning for the United States Congress to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 47 of the 50 U.S. states.

Modern observance is primarily in local celebrations. Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing traditional songs such as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing", and reading of works by noted African American writers such as Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou. Celebrations include rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and Miss Juneteenth contests. The Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles, of Coahuila, Mexico, also celebrate Juneteenth.
