QATAR: U.S PARTNER of CHOICE IN THE PERSIAN GULF

Today, the U.S -Qatari relationships has never been stronger. Frequent visits to Doha in recent months by U. S officials including Senators and U.S Representatives. Significantly, Qatar officially becomes U.S partner in the Gulf, and a major non-NATO all alleys. A move that regards the partnership between Doha and Washington, a status that paves the way for greater cooperation in defense, trade and security. This article seeks to examine the relationship between the U.S and the State of Qatar.

 

 

First, the U. S admin. views Doha as an important in confronting urgent priorities, helping for diplomacy, as well as a solution to the growing European gas crisis. Thus, possibility that Qatar would be call up by the U.S to help address potential gas deficit in Europe, and for it to respond positively, speaks to the importance of the small country gives to its relations with the U.S. whereas, Emir (Ruler) Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani was the first regional leader to meet President Joe Biden since he becomes President. Second, U.S -Qatar business relationship continues to be robust and thriving with the total economic partnership of more than $ 200 billion. The U.S has over 120 companies operating in Qatar in a wide variety of industries with foreign direct investment totaling $ 110.6 billion, making the U.S the country's largest foreign direct investor. Further, since 2017, the trade between the two countries has a growth rate over 100 percent. The U.S is a leading equipment supplier and partner of Qatar's oil and gas sector. U.S companies also performed well in export sales to Qatar's defense, aviation, ICT, healthcare, construction/engineering sectors. While the U.S imports from Qatar include Liquefied Natural Gas, aluminum, fertilizer and Sulfur. Third, Qatar has always had positive views of the talks on nuclear and believes that dialogue is the only way to reach a fair deal according to Qatar's foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. Whereas Qatar 's commitment to conflict resolution in Article 7 of its constitution that Qatari foreign policy be based on the principle of strengthening peace and security by means of encouraging peaceful solution of international disputes. In this light, Qatari leaderships have consistently continued dialogue with Iran to reduce regional tensions, while simultaneously cooperating with the U. S efforts to counter Iran strategically. Here, countless reports show that Qatar has been busy to concise Washington and Tehran's differences. Fourth, Qatar hosting the largest U.S military in the Middle East. ( Al-Udied ), America’s spent billions building and maintains Al-Udied and so has Qatar, where the U.S recently approve $3 billion expansion of the above Airbase ( according to Congress Research Service), which further reinforces the long term relationships between the U. S and the State of Qatar.

Fifth, U.S -Qatar year of Culture - Qatar expanding its culture with the U.S It is the strong cultural and educational links enhance Qatar's relationships with future world leaders. This enables the country to make friends and influence people - not through military might but through its most attractive asset notably culture, education, language and values. It is the things that make the people love the country rather than fear it. Year 2021, U.S - Qatar Year of Culture with annual celebration.
