A Makana Mystery

By

Parker Bilal

  Review by Brenda Repland

In this fifth of the series, Makana is still living in somewhat self-imposed exile from northern Sudan on a houseboat in Cairo.  The former policeman – now private investigator – is hired to find a college student who has disappeared.

Mourad Hafiz had exhibited none of the wilder side of student life so the possibility of drugs is eliminated.  In fact, he has a reputation as a very caring and heartfelt person.  Why has he dropped out of college and vanished from sight?

As Makana investigates, he suspects that Mourad was involved in some sort of political activism.  This is happening in 2005, at a time when Sudanese are fleeing to Egypt, living in encampments around the city.  In the midst of this growing hostility toward the migrants, Mubarak is reelected with an 88% majority.  The stirrings of organized opposition (think Arab Spring) are starting to rise.

As in his other books, Parker Bilal depicts the atmosphere of the time.  (Note to Mr. Trump:  not all Muslims are alike any more than all Christians.)  One of the most interesting lines of advice comes from one Egyptian to another:  “You mistake our national pride for confidence.”

This is a heart-thumping-good mystery.  Makana’s search will reveal that some kinds of corruption are not confined to India.
